hi guys

i have a 17 foot Glastron that has raised mooring cleats on the vertical part of the hull about a 1/3 of the way back from the bow, these are only ever used for fenders and mooring to a jetty at the boat ramp, never used for long term mooring

as they stick out and could hook someone when walking past, when on the trailer, and for the looks im thinking of replacing them with pop up cleats, yeah something else to muck about with.

my thoughts are as i live in a hot climate and the boat is trailered i might just cap the back end of the cleat, where it would normally drain to the bilge, as the cleat shafts will be horizontal any water collected there should drain back out or dry out

what do you think???

also has anyone done this before, I've seen them added in addition to existing cleats but has anyone replaced there existing stand up cleats with pop ups??

Re: school me on pop up cleats

I added some pop up mid-ship cleats to my boat because it had none. I went with oversize (8" vs the 6" that were installed at the bow and stern of my boat) cleats so that I can safely use them for long term tie ups and installed them properly using over-size backing plates and drains. How hard would it be to route a bit of tubing from the water collection cups to the bilge of your boat?

My Stingray's factory installed midship cleats are pop-ups, installed perpendicular to the water (shafts are horizontal), and have the drains capped. Should be no issues installing yours that way.

My pop up bow cleat, however, has a drain line installed.

The only downside I have seen with pop-up cleats is the design on some of them that use a push-button mechanism to release the cleat. I have seen a few of them which have the buttons that have broken, or don't engage smoothly after years of grime. The designs that simply make the user pull up on the cleat itself seem to be fine.

im going to do this as a project over the end of year break, i was concerned that the pop up cleats foot print would cover the mounting holes of the existing cleat, if you asked me i would have said that they had 4 mounting screws, however last night i took a look and they only have two mounting posts about 2.5 inches apart so perfect for what i want to do, and i can easily access the underside.

so now just have to find the one that suits best.

I added two Attwood stainless steel pop-up cleats to my last boat and they worked very well. I liked how they could be pushed down when not in use. He is pic. of them.
