Went to my first swap meet today looking for parts for my sea king. drove like over 100 miles and ended up buying this old motor from some guy that lives less than 5 miles from me, duh... So I have a 497 model 5 hp, 1-16 added to my collection. It is a shift model. supposed to start and run poorly. My brief research says it is a 1949 model, first year I think serial no. 507493. So anyone have any tips or maybe a parts breakdown for this motor let me know.

Like any other motor do the basics. See if you have spark to both (I believe it's a two cylinder) cylinders, clean the carb, check the lower unit for lube and see what you get. Make sure the tank (I believe it has tank on top) is clean. If you drop the bowl on the Tillotson carburetor make sure to back off the lower adjusting needle or you will bend it when you drop the bowl. Been there and done that. Once it's running you want to make sure it's pumping water. Do a search and there are some sites that cater to and provide information about Scots and their relatives like Firestone. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks F_R, got the list! Thanks 2-cycle for the carb tip! put some mix in this morning and cranked it with my drill and it runs! only thing I can see missing is the plastic part that goes on the mag lever. When the temp goes up I will put in test barrel. Not sure what to do next becuz I'm used to having to do some work first to get them running. Then I clean them up. so guess I'll spray it down with simple green and head to the carwash. will keep you posted. more research tells me auto fuel shut off and auto venting might cause problems, will find out.

You have a rare one if the gas tank isn't full of rust.
