I'm going to look at an old outboard that looks like my 3.6 wizard. It does not have a recoil, just a rope pull type. The tank is red with the decals knocked off. Seller can't find a name or id plate. It has the tillotson carb. Any idea how old it might be or what it might be. painted red, tilltson carb, rope start. maybe F_R or 2cycle could comment.

well I'm not 2 cycle or F_R although sometime I do dressup like F_R.... but the only one who made 3.6's for Western Auto (wizard) was Scott McCulloch Outboard 59-1964

Well, the Scott-Atwater line could be anything from 1936 into the late 1960's with little change. The name did change in the 1960's to McCulloch. Being red, if that is the original paint probably puts it in the McCulloch era. They were also marketed under different names, as you see in your Wizard.

I haven't seen it in person yet, just a poor photo, but the tank design and the rope start might help, like I said all the seller can tell me is it turns over, planning to make the trip tommarrow, he also has one he says is bigger but no longer turns over. will hopefully get them both and will post the numbers when I get them home.

powerhead design changed very very little from what I have seen on the Scotty 3.6's from 46----> on and if McCscott was the only 3.6 maker for wizard that narrows it down to only one option.

yep, 3.6 scotty but I would be looking for some numbers stamped into the block that might tell more about the true age of it..tank my say wizard but thats not 100% sure thing is it?....those tanks are bad to rust away so It could have had the tank replaced.

Cool engines and well built ignitions...I have 3 of those all the way back to 1946,
