Hi guys,
Seems my puter keeps dumping on me. Just ordered 1 for my son this xmas but guess I need 1 two!!
So short and long of it:
I have seen where people screw there deck to the stringers and I have seen where they are resined to the stringers.
What are your opinions in regards to why screw or why glue? My gut feeling is that screws will eventually fail whereas the original boat I have the technique was to resin/glass the deck to the stringers.
Any help appreciated in regards to your insights.

For me, If it's done properly there is no problem screwing the deck to the stringers. Pre-Drill, Poke some resin down in the holes, precoat all the screws with resin and screw em home. Very few properly screwed down decks will fail due to water damage from the screw holes. Especially if the boat is maintained and stored properly.

I guess it would depend on how perfect the stringer to deck is.

You could go either way if its a close fit.

If the stringers are skinny (3/4" plywood) you might be better off using an adhesive and weighting the decking down until the adhesive cures unless your aim is real good with the screw gun.

If the stringers are wider or have a nailer built into the top then screwing shouldn't be a problem.

The way I see most people install a deck in a f'glass boat here is:
1. Screw deck to stringers
2. Tab deck to hull
3. Glass deck in

Since the screws are under the protective fiberglass barrier water infiltration won't be a problem.

I screwed my deck down with stainless screws, pl glue, and 3m 5200. I pilot drilled the hole and screwed it down. Then I glassed over it.

Guys,
Thanks alot for getting back to me. All of your answers make sense. Frisco I have watched your rehab any number of times. In fact your attitude to geterdone made me jump on this. I researched and read alot. You other guys I've been reading and watching your flow of recommendations.
On this boat what I found was @ 1/2" to 3/4" resin of stringers to underside of glassed deck. It seems natural procedure for the application/techniques of the time. BUT and I say BUT due to the age of the boat and the lack of maintenance there was alot ot resin missing between the stringers and underside of the deck. So hence the newer tech. may be the better tech for install. Just bothers me to punch more holes in a wet area.
All the stringers are shot, the transom is shot, the foam was all wet but as I dug into the project it is a challenge and fun. I only dropped the grinder on my ankle 1x and got 8 stitches. Love of labor and completion!

What is the theory of applying a foam square on the underside of the stringer to deck prior to setting the stringer? Again I have heard this is to allow a "soft" application versus a "hard" application whereas the hard application of stringer direct to hull may cause stress and cracks.
If this is the case where should all soft vs hard applications be considered in regards to;
stringers to deck
stringers to hull
stringers to bulkheads
stringers to new transom

Check the first link in my signature below. It has the details you are looking for. To answer your specific question, It's never advisable to have any Wood In direct contact with the fiberglass hull sides or bottom.

Thanks for the insights. They help clarify the reasoning of the techniques. I just skimmed your forum and will read alot further into it.
Right now the weather is getting too cool to glass so I can still work on alot of other things like prepping the hull completely, getting more materials to store indoors, gather info for the new re-wiring and components.....lots to do.

Again thank you for your postings. I'll keep in touch as I move along.

Nice progress. One option I read about for your decking is to glue it down, put screws in to hold it until it sets, then remove the screws, fill the holes w/resin, then fiberglass it. I don't know if this is any better or worse than the other ways mentioned, but another option.

One thing not yet mentioned is the way my boat was constructed and it had a cross board that was recessed into the stringer that gives the floor some more support and something to screw into How that was attached to the stringer whether with tabbing, glassing, or screws itself I could not tell you since there was nothing left of my stringers that it would have been attached to and the cross boards were disintegrated as well only the impressions of them in the foam were left.

Hey People,
Thanks again. All of this is good to have. Here's a quick one. Let's "assume" ha ha fisrt three letters. That in regards to the stringers which of course are mud wood but the fiberglass is intack. That I grind them down to @1/2" of the hull, clean the adoublescribble out of them, then would I be able insert my new wood stringers into that 1/2" saved "sleeve" then glass it all up?

Just a hankering question, of course with pb/foam or other material under the wood stringers as we have discussed.

Its been done before .. but I dont personally like this approach.

Bottom line is It can be done .. not as good as the lam the stringers in place.

Yes, I am not married to this idea yet. Just a consideration.
TY!
Also any home remedies for testing the existing gas tank? I know 1983, so If I do decide on a new one I'll probably go to 100 gal vs the 80 original.
From Pa if you guys know a good place for a new tank let me know.

In regards to the stringers and the underside of the new wood glassed deck what space allowance would you recommend for pl glue or resin/peanut butter prior to screwing?
