Sea Drive Engines

Hi, I have a 1988 20' Sport Craft Center Console Boat. It has a 130 HP OMC Sea Drive Out Board Engine. We had the whole lower unit rebuilt when we bought it. When we are out for a day of boating, it tends to over heat, and an alarm goes off. Any idea about what the problem could be? I think that the engine is to small for the boat. If thats what you all think the problem is, does anyone know were i can find a used Sea Drive Out Board Engine?<br /><br />Thanks <br />Dan

Welcome!<br /><br />The Sea Drives never got a horsepower desigination but if what you have is the 2.0 liter motor (V4 looper), that should run the boat nicely. Is this what you have?<br /><br />If the lower unit was just rebuilt and the motor does indeed get hot, I would suspect the water pump was not properly replaced.<br /><br />First we have to verify that the motor does indeed get hot. The horn will also sound continuiously if the motor gets hot or there is a fuel restriction.<br /><br />Is it a constant sound or a on-off-on sound?<br /><br />When the horn sounds and you pull back on the throttle, does the horn stop? Or do you have to wait for a while?

Dhadley, when the alram sounds, we throw the boat in reverse hard. the alar will turn off, but the motor usually stalls. Please help!!!<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Dan

If the alarm stops that quick I doubt its overheating. <br /><br />It could be a fuel restriction alarm but without verifying what motor you have its hard to tell you what to look for.

hey, sometimes the alarm will turn off after you hit reverse, sometimes it will take awhile.<br /><br />Dan

Again -- lets verify what motor you have. Is it indeed a V4 looper? The loopers and crossflows have differnt syatems.

Ok, lets think about what happens when the horn goes off. If the motor overheats it will take some time for the horn to quit. Usually you can shut it off and the horn will still sound after it sits for a while if you just turn the key back on. Obviously it will stop eventually.<br /><br />If you slow down and the horn stops, then its probably a fuel restriction warning. As the motor demands less fuel pressure the horn will quit. <br /><br />A simple thing to do would be to get some thermal melt sticks from your dealer and verify that the motor is getting hot or not.

Dhadley - You said "The Sea Drives never got a horsepower desigination".<br /><br />FYI - OMC did provide a hp rating in the OMC shop manual for my 1987 1.6 L V4 SeaDrives. They are 110 hp. Don't know about other years or models though.
