I have a 1985 sea drive that I like but would like more power. Can any 4 cylinder evinrude/johnson be mated to the sea drive bracket? Can a 6 cylinder engine be mated to the 4 cylinder bracket? I have a line on a 1987boat with a real nice trailer & 185hp motor cheap but I like my hull with the sea drive bracket. thanks for any imformation.

Re: Sea Drive

Without knowing which Sea Drive you have a specific answer is kinda difficult at best. Basically if you have a 4 cylinder you can't easily bolt on a V6. If you have a 1.6 V4 then you can bolt on any late model crossflow V4 powerhead as long as it has the right shift linkage bosses. If you have a 2.0 then that's about it as far as outboard powerheads. Performance increases on a Sea Drive is not as easy as increasing performance on an outboard. It's a lot like a stern drive in that you cannot easily change engine height (X dimension).

Like I said, kinda hard to answer.....

Re: Sea Drive

I have had 3 seadrives,I love having a full transom,BUT,times changed.Engines are more efficent,as Dhad.said, you cannot raise the height of a seadrive (or lower if needed)via the bolt holes.I have a nice older anacapri hull built here in s.Fl.it to had a seadrive,I converted to a standard bracket after closing in the transom holes in the transom.its not hard at all.You are at a disadvantage these days with the seadrive in that you cant get parts easy, what is avail ,is usually expensive.seadrives tended to be to low to the warter at instillation,my thought is the formula used, thoug tried was not right. My boat is like a rocketship since i converted.i did a 23 wellcraft too.To answer your question though.Yes ,as Dhad said ,most of the v4 will work as for powerhead change ing.I also believe if you pull your seadrive off the bracket, you can bolt a standard v6 .It would be through the mounting bolts for the engine. You would need to remove the standard bracket assy.I was considering it ,and started doing research thru a knowledgable friend.BUT study it more.I also think you can install a looper eng using your present assy ,with a bit of work. What ever you decide,IF you decide to swap the v4 powerhead,be sure to reuse your current intake manifold, the mounting for the cable assy is on it.You have alot of options, your current cable /harness system will work if you stay evin/john,excemp for the newer ficht or 60 degree etec systems.sen me a private message if you need parts.I may have some trim and tilt stuff .let me know how your doing too.i like those conversion projects
