I have a Sea King 15 GG18737d 1962.

I got this motor basicly free with the purchase of a jon boat. The owner did not know anything about it and just said here you go. I worked on it to get spark and compression was good. Cleaned the carb and everthing was working great in the garage. So I went on a lake to try it out. I ran the engine long enough to get a good low idle adjustment done. I started the high adjustment. As I was moving the screw I did not have enough forward balast so I moved some stuff around and started running the engine up to try and get WOT. After almost getting it to a plan the engine locked up on me. The head area is discolored. The engine would turn over after it cooled down. There was water coming out the back the whole time. The impeller was replaced before I went out.
My question is does this thing have a thermostat that could have stuck and were is it? :(
How much damage could have been done?
IF the engine is bad does anyone need some parts so I can offset the cost of another motor? :D:D

I don't believe the Sea King has a thermostat. If it does it will be at the top of the head under a triangular cover.Pretty obvious. If it locked up under power it is probably toast. If you remove the exhaust cover you can kook in and see if any scoring and piston damage. It will no doubt need a head gasket.

Re: Sea King 15 Locked up (Overheated)

I just did a compression test and it had 95psi on both cylinders. I turned the engine over by hand with and without the spark plugs in. With the spark plugs out I turned the engine over and nothing came out of the cylinders so it did not hydo lock.
How can I check if the coolant passages are clear?

I will pull the side covers and check for damage now.

Thank You,

Ok now I need parts help. As a note the Model and S/N are in my top post. I have a 1062 Gale made Sea King 15. It looks like the coolant passaged were plugged from corostion and some sort of coating that was all over the inside of the motor. The coolant port that lets water into the engine from the shaft area had a large chip right inside the hole. I have pulled the head and checked the cylinders. I have cleaned al the coolant ports and the exhaust area. Not I need gaskets to put this thing back together. Where can I go to find a gasket kit?

I believe you can get those at a well established BRP dealer.
I think that is the 19.94 cu in block used by the early evinrude 15 and the gale 15.As I understand it the Gale part numbers are the same as E/J.
Your motor is a deluxe 62. you will need the evinrude/johnson part numbers.
Hopefully someone will be along that is a little more positive about shareing parts. you may find help at www.aomci.org
