Hey guys I need some information on a 5 H.P. Seaking Outboard Motor, Model# GG-8977B. Serial Number 95X761032. Anybody know when this outdoor was built ?? I have rebuilt it, almost. It's been setting around for over 10 years. I have added oil to the cylinders, turn the flywheel by hand only after adding the oil and rotating the motor to let the oil coat the cylinders really good. Rings are in good shape, replaced both plugs, J6JM aren't made anymore, but the cross-over chart said to use J12C champion plugs, Points have been cleaned and set, Lower unit oil changed.

So three pulls on the starter cord and the outboard starts, much to my surprise :eek:, so a couple of questions, I only ran it out of gear in the tank for about a minute, then I shut it down, so far so good. 1) Should there be a water spray from the water outlet below the cylinders at a idle?? their is a water pump housing between the lower unit and motor. The owner's guide call for removing the water by-pass cover (small metal strip on the lower port side of the upper pump housing) when running in a tank. I removed this cover and still didn't get any water out of the exhaust tube housing or water outlet. After asking everybody I know some say it dosn't spray at idle and others say the pump's not working. Should I have water spray at idle ??

Here's what the book says :

Water for cooling purposes is provided by action of the single stage rubber impeller centrifugal pump located between the upper and lower housing of the lower unit. This functions as a displacement pump at slow motor speeds and as a centrifugal pump during operation in the higher speed range. There are two water inlets in thr gear case. During FORWARD operation of the motor, water enters the slot, equipped with a screen, located directly below exhaust outlet, and is forced through the cooling system, later to be discharged at the outlet in the exhaust tube provided for this purpose. Water enters the cooling system through the holes in the water by-pass cover above the anti-cavitation plate when operating in REVERSE.

NOTE :

If while operating motor at full speed, it should show signs of slowing down, immediately check water discharge at water outlet, located at the rear or the motor directly below the cylinder. In case of no water immediately shut off motor and check water inlet for obstruction.

So after reading this, could it be, that the motor needs to be in gear running at full speed to get the water:confused:

Sorry it so long just need help before I ruin this good little motor.

Thank TeamHillbilly

Re: Sea King 5 H.P

It is a 1959 motor built by Gale Products Division of OMC. A very fine motor.

J6C plugs are available. What lousy source advises J12C? Terrible advice.

You absolutely must fix the water pump. Listen to what the book says. It is supposed to be putting out a heavy splatter of water any time the motor is running. "Slowing down" from overheating is what happens as you are about to burn up the pistons. Too late. Fix the water pump before you get to that point.

The powerhead has to be removed in order to disconnect the shift rod before you can get the lower unit off to access the water pump. Not as bad as it sounds. But you will need a new 303467 powerhead gasket and a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring for the carbon seal assembly. You will see what I mean when you get in there. The integrity of the carbon seal is absolutely vital. If it leaks, goodby powerhead bearings.
