Hello, I am new to the outboard world. I picked up an old sea king 9 horse, model VWB19077A. As near as I can tell it is a 1965.

First off, I need correct plugs for this beast. I got it running, but it is a little rough yet. Also, looking at other posts, the recommended mix was 24:1. This seams a little high to me, is this correct? Also, I am getting a little fresh gear oil coming from the water inlets on the lower unit after I changed the lower unit oil. I filled it using the lower fill hole, but I tried to flush out the old oil using the upper hole first.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Sea King 9HP

1965 is the correct year. Motor ID call it a 9.2 horse. Motor should be a water cooled engine and fuel mix should be 50 to 1. Original recommended spark plug is no longer availible. Champion L82C is the best match for the old plug.

Concerning the gear oil test it by sniffing it. It is probably unburned gas oil mix which turns white and frothy and exits out the lower unit when you pull it out of the water. If it is gas oil it could be from the high oil to gas mixture you are using. However earlier chrysler motors had a recirulation system the would take the unburned condensed gas from the cylinders and drain them down the kingpin into the motor leg basically dumping raw gas into the lake.

Re: Sea King 9HP

Thanks for the reply. I would rather run 50:1, as that is what I am used to. Also, I dont want to be the only guy on the lake puffing huge clouds of 2stroke smoke out his boat. I will try 50:1 and see how it works.

BTW, What happens if you fill the LU oil from the upper hole? I am getting fuel oil mixed with my water (ran it in a garbage can to get the LS needle valve set), but it seems like I am running a little gear oil out thewater intakes, it has that distinct gear oil smell. Like I said, I tried filling from the top, and I am wondering if that was the problem. It seems to run fine now, all I have to do is get the HS needle set. I havnt checked the lower unit oil again, but I will soon.

When you say LS and HS needle set are you refering to high speed and low speed needle? There should be two holes on the lower unit a drain and a vent hole. One upper and one lower. The correct way to fill with oil is to remove both and insert oil tube or pump into lower hole and fill till it comes out the top hole. Hole oil bottle or pump in position while installing upper Vent plug then remove oil bottle or pump from lower position and install lower drain plug.

My chrysler is a 1967 45 HP gas pig I ended up removing the hose that drains down the motor leg and drilled a hole in my lower cowl where I extended the hose and duct taped a small plastic bottle to the hose to collect the reciruilation fuel oil mix do it dont go in the lake. After a day of fishing it is only a couple of table spoons but at least it dont go in the lake anymore.
