The coils would have been the First!! thing I would have checked.
You have to pull the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod before you can get the lower unit and water pump off. At the top end of the drive shaft, you will find a carbon seal assembly. That seal is vital and will ruin the engine if it is compromised. Always make sure all the parts are good, and assembled correctly. And always use a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring (these are parts of the seal)
