We received a 1972 Sea Ray SRV 240 for free. Is a boat this old worth restoring? The hull seems solid. The floor is a little mushy when you step down into the cutty, The GM V8 and stern drive ran 2 years ago. Mice chewed up some wires behind the steering column and gages. How can I check out the transom? Can I find parts for the outdrive or could the outdrive be updated? The engine Model # is TUFR-19E Serial # J0170617 How many hp is the engine, a 5.0 or 5.7. Help Thanks Dave in Michigan

Dave,

OMC, MerCruiser or Volvo drive?

Many hulls are worth saving, if you want to put the work into it. The Sea Ray is a decent hull.

Check the transom by knocking on it like you would a door.

In an I/O, the tansom doesn't do a whole lot, best to check the areas where the engine mounts.

Hi,
The boat in question has an OMC outdrive. Can I still get parts for a 1972? The floor is a little mushy just inside the cuddy cabin. Does this mean that the stringers are bad? The floor is solid everywhere else.

Dave

Dave Haupt,

Getting parts for that old OMC drive are going to be a little difficult. THey're out there, just not as readily available as some others.

It's hard to say how much rot you have. THe only way to find out is to cut an inspection hole. I would suggest cutting one the size of a standard deck plate that you can install over the hole. If you find that just a section of the floor is rotten, you can fix that. If you find that the patient is termanily ill, you can slap on the plate and run it until the end.
