I came across some information regarding sea strainers for raw water cooled engine-sounded like a good idea to filter the incoming water. My question is can i use something like this for my 3.0 mercruiser or are these reserved for other types of engines. Thanks any clarification guys

Re: Sea Strainer question

It's not needed because you already have a "screen" at the water pick up point of the outdrive. The strainers are for the thru hull fittings with no screen.

Re: Sea Strainer question

If you drive in shallow water(sand/mud) then a strainer would help.It would keep some of the junk out of your motor.J

It doesn't have a screen per-say, it has small holes on each side of the drive, the ones you can see from the outside looking at the drive. Sea strainers can be used with any engine and Merc makes an add on kit type which bolts to the rear of the transom. The factory ones can also be used, just depends on how much work you want to do. As mentioned above, if your dealing with sand and mud you may want to install one, otherwise you should be fine with what you have.

Edit: take that back, the Gen 2 do have a screen up in the housing item 2

I would just leave it. My 1983 did fine without one and I did have an occasion with sand. They are usually only used with thru hull pickups. Even my Bravo with drive pickup doesn't have a strainer.

I don't believe Alldodge brought this up from the past, I'm pretty sure I saw another member bring it up a few days ago and the post may have been either moved or deleted leaving Alldodge look to be the culprit. We'll just let this one fade back into the archives. Just another reminder to keep an eye on the dates.;) Thanks guys.:)
