Seafoam before oil change?

Hey all,

1988 4.3 175hp Mercruiser

Its a new boat to me - not sure how often the previous owner changed the oil...

Should I pour in some Seafoam BEFORE changing the oil - or AFTER?

Since I need to run it for a few minutes before I change oil to warm it up - wondering if I should add it to the oil first, run it, then drain it all and see what gunk comes out....

Thanks!

If you want the motor to last leave the seafoam at the store and let some other guy buy it.

Seafoam
Alcohol
Machine oil
Naptha

Never have understood why someone would want this kind of stuff in the gas or oil

Just warm it up a bit and then change the oil

My opinion only, others do vary

Seafoam loosens stuff that shouldn't be loosened - Like hard, crusty oil residue and the like in the oilways. Do you want that crud scoring the bearings before it falls into the oil pan to be filtered?

Unlike AllDodge, I do use Seafoam in my gas, but only for 2 strokes to help keep the combustion chamber relatively clear of carbon build up. In 4 stroke oil and gas - Never!

may as well pour a quart of diesel fuel in the engine.....same results as seafoam and about 1/5th the cost. I wouldnt do it.

Cool - thanks for your input and responses!

I took the first advice of AllDodge and did not use the Seafoam... I'm glad to see that others had the same opinion!

I will start a new thread with my first oil change experience...

Thank you all!
