found an old 1956 seahorse up in the attic , took it down. cleaned the tank , hooked up the lines. its got no spark. so now i will be taking it apart and selling all the parts. the problem is i dont see a way of taking the speed control plate off. i got the recoil off , and pulled the flywheel ,with no problem. about ready to take a gorrila bar to this thing. if anyone knows of a decent repair manual , or if those repair manuals on cd are any good please let me know. ------- also the two coils look to be new , but one of the 2 little spring loaded things that ride agianst the top of the crank is making contact with its counter part and the other is not , sorry i dont know what the parts are called , im thinking this might be the reason for no spark. thanx. for any info

Re: seahorse 5.5 speed control ?????

You found a '56 model in the attic with no spark and because of this you're going to junk it?????
There's not a '56 model motor in existance that has original coils that actually has spark. Those are smooth running motors and with a little work, there's a great chance it will run like new. If you're interested in repairing it, you might check out the "top secret files" thread at the top of the johnson/evinrude forum. There's several threads that will tell you how to get good spark--"points and coils" thread, and how to adjust the carburetor, etc. Those carburetors are extremely simple and reliable and you shouldn't be scared at all to take it apart. You will have to take off the powehead to get the lower unit off to change the impeller, but it's easy to do for anyone.
Since you're taking it all apart anyway to part it out, you're not out any work.
If you have no need for the motor, why not just sell the whole thing and save yourself the work?
If it is a '56, then the face plate will come off after you remove the cowl and take off the knobs from the carburetor. I'm worried it may not be a '56 because the face plate is really easy to take off. Got pics??:)
There's pictures of all the parts and their names in the "points and coils" section of the top secret files, if you need help identifying the parts.
Good luck with your motor, it's probably a good one.

BTW, Welcome to iboats!:p
There are lots of folks like me here that love those '50s OMC outboards and there are several absolute OMC geniuses here that would be more than willing to help you fix your motor. Myself, I had little experience fixing outboards a few years ago, and with these guys help, was able to get every OMC I've ever gotten running well. I enjoy working on these because the engineering is so ingenious, yet simple. They are made so that they are easy to work on with common tools as well. You can just about totally disassemble that motor with a 7/16 and 1/2" end wrench and a flathead screwdrive.

---hope you'll return with some "how to fix it" questions......

JBJ , thanx for the info , i think my question was misguided , the plate i was trying to remove is the plate the sits under the fly wheel and holds the coils i always thought it was called the speed control , i looked for the top secret page , to try to find a diagram but cant see it anywhere!

Four screws, arranged in a rectangle. Two up high on the coil laminates, two down low between the points and coil laminates.

But, I concur with JBJ - why part out a motor that needs some basic TLC? Sell it complete!

Had me confused there for a minute, the little spring loaded things are the breaker points. Yes, they could be the problem.
