Just when did the Johnny/Rude thing start. Question is relevent here (this catagory) I think as its a "what fits what" or "it fits both" after when on parts. Thanks in advance

There are a lot of parts that will interchange on these engine's. You just need the parts books, and experience to know just what, which ones.

Let me rephrase my question..when did Johnson and Evinrude become the same? Year wise..maybe I will ask again later in Outboards/Non repair.

Seems to me in the very early '50s begining with the JW-Lightwin (3hp) in '52, and finishing up with the CD (5.5) in '54.
There have been times when an engine was available only on one line. For example, in '69 you could get an 18hp Evinrude or a 20hp Johnson, but not the other way around.

But even then the engine/mechanical parts interchange Paul.Problems were motor covers control knobs etc.were different. On old motors all I have are Johnson manuals, and they have served me well.Motor covers and such have been NLA for years so it was never a real problem.I know this continued into the '60s,and early '70s were the same.(at least the 9 1/2 motors,Just paint and decals were different.

The change came when the parts/service manuals started saying Omc/Johnson/Evinrude on them. Not a seperate manual for each.

DHP

Oh, I see what you mean DHPMarine. I was thinking simply of the basic mechanical parts rather than the non-interchangable 'trim' pieces.
It seems to me that the JW/Lightwin never had any any differences whatsoever other than paint & decals. Does that seem correct to you?

The first "Johnny/rude" engine was the 1951 Johnson rd series seahorse 25 and the evinrude 25 horse bigtwin. They had completely identical engines and only the looks on the outside were different.

Paul,I agree.the 'wrap around' motor covers were the same. The difference came with the lower motor pan,and removable upper cover.I think this indicates they were the same at one time, then seperated as far as appearence at a later date, then went back to being the same.

DHP

Re: Seahorse/Fastwin

Thanks for the info people...I'll have to do a little more reading up on these motors history. I came across a 58 18hp Johnson, and a 1960 Merc 10hp. Born in 1950, grew up with them all, and as I loved the looks of the Merc's, I had NO IDEA how well made those old Johnsons were(neither are repairable, so parting out). Light, reliable,...light years ahead on that HEAVY old Merc. But they STILL are sexy motors, them there Mercs. Thanks again....Robby
