In a previous post someone asked about a replacement for Merc Perfect Seal.
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=011158

You replied:
'Also in the auto trade it is called Perfect Seal #4 and it is the same as the Johnson/Evinrude "Gasket Sealing Compound". Aviation Permatex is completely different.'

I called Bombardier (OMC) a couple of months ago asking the same question about OMC Gasket Sealing Compound (which I assume is the same as the Johnson/Evinrude GSC).

Bombrdier told me that Perfect Seal #4 was the same thing as the OMC Gasket Sealing Compound. BUT I can't find any reference to Perfect Seal #4 on the Permatex web site. Several auto parts stores told me they had no reference to that particular product. And I called Permatex and they couldn't find a reference to Perfect Seal #4 either.

Did the name/ number change on this product, cause I looked pretty hard for it and couldn't find any clue that it's even made anymore. Does (did) it come in a can or tube?

I had heard that the Aviation Sealing compound was an appropriate substitute, and it seems to have the same properties as the OMC stuff (non-hardening, gasket sealer instead of gasket maker, presumably thinner than the ones that come in tubes since it comes in that small can with the applicator brush). I did see some other number Perfect Seal products (maybe #1 & #2?) but they came in tubes rather than the can.

I'm still confused, can you help clarify this for me?

Thanks!

Re: seahorse: follow up question

what is the drive? basicaly just need to use a non silicone base glue to hold a seal or gasket in place or act as a lubericant while pressing a seal into a cavity. now that you do not coat OB head gaskets with it. I havent followed the whole thing/other post but seems to be a case of over thinking. that makes my tumor hurt! if you do a yahoo search for some chemicals the MSID sheets will show up then you can compare chemicals. I have to go soak my tumor and stand on 1 foot! argh!

a.d.,

mine is an '89 4.3L Cobra, but they specify this for so many different uses bedsides gaskets (including things like applying to bolt threads to waterproof, seal outdrive waterpump housing, etc.), thought it would be nice to match the OEM product to be safe.

Perfect Seal is not Permatex, it is a different company.

The $4.05 small can from a Johnson/Evinrude dealer is a bargain compared to the cost of the larger cans sold by Merc.

most of the time OEM was guessing. that bellows is better off dry. when you use that stuff the bellows will slide when the clamp is torqued. the book tells install clamp in 3:00 position
which I bet that is where your hole is. put it in the 12:00 position the drive will not rise high enough to hit it. bob

Re: seahorse: follow up question

hello
buy the perfect seal or the BRP gasket maker. makes life so much easier. in a bind you will find that a reasonable subsitute for bellows adhesive is 3m super weatherstrip adhesive. however when installing with weatherstrip adhesive and not bellows adhesive you must install the bellows and wait 10 min or so to allow it to cure before tightening the clamp or its possible it will slide. bellows adhesive is allowed to cure before installation. on most head gaskets i coat them with perfect seal. works better than the sealer on the gasket on a used gasket surface.
