Maybe it is just a spun hub.Or does it actually thump or clunk when it goes out of gear?Does it go back in gear if you slow down?

The prop is simple it gos on with a shear pin no rubber in the prop two blades. When it gos out of gear it just gos out of gear. I would like to get as much info. about this motor so I can try to order the right manual for it. I do not remember the h.p. of the motor because the stickers on the cover are gone I think it was a 9. something. I really want to fix and use again so any help will be greatfull.

Re: seaking o.b.

The motor is a 70-71 7 hp at 6,000 rpm.Champion CJ8 plug set to .025,points set at .020.
You didn't do anything wrong.I know I've been pretty busy.
Unfortunately my manual doesn't say too much about
the design of the lower unit except some basic gearcase assembly.I'm not sure but if it has a shift I think it is spring loaded and I believe the spring is prone to failure.
If no shift there is probably a gearcase problem.
Unless you have a real love for this motor I wouldn't put too much money into it.Clinton has been out of business for some time and these are marginal performers.
I think you would be bettrer off saving your money, part out the Clinton on ebay and put it toward a Johnson/Evinrude 5, 5.5, 6,7.5 Any model from about 54 up.Any of these will out perform your Clinton and will be quieter and smoother doing it.
Routine parts are still available for these motors some right here on iboats.Sorry I can't be more help.
