Seal Sealer?

I?m ready to install new seals below the water pump and in the prop. shaft head unit.

It seems to me that if a sealant isn?t used while installing these seals there?s a possibility water might enter around the outer perimeter of the seal (the mating of metal to metal).

Any thoughts or ideas as to what might guarantee a good seal for the seals?

Thanks,
Bob

I use permatex. I feel it can't hurt. I think the manual calls for sealant.

Re: Seal Sealer?

I went to the Permatex site and found 8 different products listed as sealants. Only one of their products mentions water: Radiator Repair Sealant. They don't seem to have anything specifically to work in a marine environment. Could one of these Permatex concoctions be an OMC Sealer 1000 equivalent or should I use something even more different like Locktite temp. or perm. thread lock?

Thanks,
Bob

you will need to ask someone smarter than me or search the threads. I am sure there is a thread. I just use the form a gasket black.

Permatex Form-a-Gasket #2 works fine for me. Use it sparingly, very thin film on outer surface that mates in the bore you're driving seal into.

RTV blue is about the same as the 1000.

I use Scotch-Grip 847 - Rubber and Gasket Adhesive.

You need a product that is highly resistant to oil, grease, gasoline and water.

Re: Seal Sealer?

I was told by Evinrude I should use this to seal up my gearcase.

Is this something I'd want to use on the baffle gasket between the exhaust housing and the power head or should I use something else or install it dry?

Thanks for all of the help so far,

Re: Seal Sealer?

Do what ever the shop manual recommends. BTW, the OMC Gasket Sealer has number of comparable products marketed Permatex such as FormaGasket Sealant Liquid, Aviation Sealer, etc. all in the same kind of package with a brush applicator.

Re: Seal Sealer?

I am tryinig to find what has worked for others in the past and learn from their experience. No where in my manuals was I able to find a sealer specified for the baffle gasket.

Off on a tangent... one of my manuals says to use a silicone sealer for the gearcase another says to use adhesive M and yet Evinrude sells me a sealer (adhesive M?) which won't dry out much less set up or get hard (although approx. 1/10 oz sample on an aluminum block did thicken to maybe twice the viscosity after a week of air drying).

I hope you can understand why I'm confused.

I want to put this back together the best I can and hopefully I'll save myself from another gearcase full of water.

It may be an anaerobic sealer, which only fully cures in the absence of air. Typically used for metal to metal sealing for crankcase halves, etc. (and is the only sealer to use for that application.) Split half gearcases may need this sealer also ... check the book.

As a general rule, if the OEM shop manual doesn't specify a sealer for a specific gasket, install dry.

Re: Seal Sealer?

In the BRP literature the alternative for Adhesive M is ScotchGrip 847 (click the thumbnail). It is sold through BRP as part number 776964.

Re: Seal Sealer?

I used the Scotch grip #847 to seal up my 1961 5.5Hp Johnson and it worked great. No problems at all.
