I have a question on sealant for drive shaft seal and shift shaft seal. I have read on line information on using OMC gasket sealer and Perfect Seal or Bellows adhesive sealant.
OMC and Mercury Perfect seal for the outside of the driveshaft pressed in seal on the Gear housing cap. Bellows adhesive sealant for the shift shaft seal. But after contacting both loctite and Permatex I find some issues. Gear oil has fiction Modifiers so causes adhesion issues for normal sealants. Its seems like one works either for oil and or water but not both. I have Permatex Gear Oil gasket maker but its not for submersion in water all the time. Loctite says their Aviation gasket maker would work but may have issues with rubber adhesion with the shift shaft. Also I asked about using Ultra Black gasket maker but Permatex said adhesion may not hold up to gear oil. OMC and Perfect seal is not made any more. So does some experienced Marine outboard mechanic have the answer on what to use?
