when you put the outdrive back to the bellhousing, do use rtv sealent on the drive gasket, like on cars, or do you use bellows adhesive?

The round rubber drive shaft gasket should be glued to the mating surface in the bellhousing with bellows adhesive/rubber cement. This will assure it stays in place when sliding the outdrive on.The flat bellhousing gasket can go on dry though I put a smear of grease on both surfaces firstThats how I do it.Charlie

All the above is assuming you have a Mercruiser, since you didn't mention anything about what kind of outdrive you have.

I too, put a real thin coating of grease on the bell housing and drive surface of my Alpha 1.......and always wondered if that's good or bad. I just thought it would help prevent water from seeping through any spot that might have a small nick or scratch, etc. And, it does make it easier to remove the old gasket at the end of the season.
I just wonder if anyone knows why this is a bad idea.
