1984 90 hp evinrude fuel pump started leaking.,

I took it apart and it looks fine. I'm wondering if I can put a sealant/rtv on it before I put it back together?

Any ideas ?

Re: sealant on fuel pump?

If memory serves me right this was a VRO engine. If it has not been converted I reccomend that you replace the VRO unit. They are expensive. I realize that the manual may give service proceedures but it is not wise to crack one open. This not only is the fuel pump but also mixes the oil. Any error in assembly could result in oil not being mixed properly. The alarms on the old ones also are not reliable.

If it was not a VRO engine or has been converted, and just has a standard fuel pump buy a rebuild kit, they are cheap.

Re: sealant on fuel pump?

The oil line had been cut when I got the motor. Also the oil tank unit is not installed.

I've been just mixing my own gas. I was working on a different issue with the motor running on the lake when I noticed the fuel pump was leaking pretty bad.

I took the pump apart, aside from the diaphram there was no other gasket between the two halfs of the pump. So i'm wondering if I put it back together with a little sealant since the pump is working but leaking
