Sealer On Outdrive Gasket?

Good Morning Everybody!

The boat is a 1989 Lund Tyee 3.0L with a 3 year old SEI drive.
I'm getting ready to reinstall the drive after pulling it to inspect, clean out the bellows, grease joints etc.
I was cleaning up both surfaces that the gasket mates to, and on the drive there is some areas where the paint let loose from the case. If you ever worked with an SEI drive you'll know what I mean how the paint lets loose.
Any way, my concern is that the gasket will not seal effectively with in those areas and will let water into someplace that it shouldn't be.
Should I use a thin coating of either RTV or like a anearobic sealer/gasket maker on the gasket for good "insurance"? Is that a bad idea?

Thanks in advance for the info!

Had the thought of painting those areas crossed your mind?

Thanks Don.
yep the thought of painting that area did cross my mind, it's just that I'd be putting down layers of paint until next fall in order to bring the area where the paint chipped up to the same level as the factory paint.

I see what you mean, leaving the aluminum unpainted makes way more sense.

Perhaps I should have been more clear for those here that just want to be a smart a$# and don't really care to give a good answer to a simple question. Even if I did prime and paint, which I will, it would not entirely fill the area of the chipped paint to make a level sealing surface, , , the factory paint is THICK. Hence the original question of should I use a sealer.

That said I will again graciousely take Don's advice.

If it were me, and there was that much of a difference between the original coating and the bare spots - I would use a file, chisel, whatever... and clean up the area where the gasket sets, and then repaint it. Then reinstall with no sealer on the gasket.
