Re: sealing plywood boats

How long do you want it to last?

Epoxy and light cloth is what you need for it to last for good period of time.
Polyester isn't that good at coating wood boats, it doesn't like to stay in place long term.

in the old days, we ran and band of glass on the seems, and then painted 3 coats of oil base paint. boat lasted 12 years, with not maintenance, other than a water hose.

Thats what i was looking for. I dont have more than 10 hrs build time in on it. And less than 50 bucks. So long as she floats, runs straight and lasts a few yrs.

I would glass the seams with poly resin and fiberglass tape, otherwise it will leak. Fill and voids with some non- oil based putty, so the fiberglass has something to adhere to. The balance of the raw plywood may be painted with poly resin or spar urethane. The poly resin is a bit better, and should be about the same price as the urethane. You can put paint over the poly or urethane, for appearance.

If you only want it to last for a short time then using polyester and glass on the seams is OK, but don't use it on the rest of the boat. Polyester without glass is very brittle, so it will start to crack soon after you start using the boat, paint is a much better option. If at all possible use epoxy, it will work much better in this type of application.
