Ok so I went to change the water pump and impeller for the first time and when I dropped the lower unit, 2 seals or gaskets or whatever you call them fell out. I have no idea where they went. They have splines that match the top of the driveshaft so I know thats where they go. But one is just round and one is tapered sort of. I have no idea which order they go in. Tapered first then the regular one. Or the regular one, then the tapered one. I think one is called a wear ring or something. I have a manual and cant find where these two came from or where they go and in which order. This motor is a 1983. 50hp. 4cyl. Any help would be great! Thanks guys.

They are to help keep carbon particle from the exhaust from getting up into the spline causing accelerated wear of the crank/verticle shaft.

reassemble with the straight collar first then the flared collar with the flare facing up. leave about one inch of spline protuding so that raising the LU into position the crank seats both collars correctly.

Great, Thanks for the fast response. It looks so funky, I would've never come up with that configuration. So just to make sure, I put the round, slinger looking ring on the drive shaft first, then put the other one on so it tapers down towards the first one and not with it tapering up towards the powerhead?
