Searay 18 ft. -replace carpeting

I have a 1994 Searay Bowrider. The carpeting needs to be replaced. This is the original carpeting and is glued to the floor and the carpeting extends up both interior sides of the boat. There is 6 feet of carpeting on the floor and about 18 inches of carpeting on each interior side of the boat.
How can I replace just the floor carpeting without it looking terrible, or if necessary, replace the carpeting all the way up the sides. Most marine carpeting comes in 6 or 8 foot widths. If I replace all the carpeting, both floor and interior sides, I would need a carpet width of 9 feet.
Any suggestions??
Thanks,

One continuous piece of carpet is a little unusual. Can you post pics?

I have a '95 that is most likely the same as yours. I don't think the floor carpet, the seat bases and side wall carpet is all one piece.

I just pulled up the carpet in a 94 200 bow rider. The center section that covers the gas tank is one piece. between the two front seats in front of the ski locker under the windshield is one piece that extends all the way up to the bow. Its not one continuous piece...

Lay out the carpet such that the seams are minimized. I put the seam in the center between the two back to back seats. The seam ran side-to-side, so I will guess(hard to remember back that far) I used the 6' wide carpet, and ran it from gunwale to gunwale, and seamed it in the middle.

They have indoor/outdoor carpet glue that is installed with a notch trowel. That works well. Use some turpentine to clean up the oil-based glue as necessary, which is what I recommend you use.

Thanks for the info. You are right, it is not one continuous piece of carpet. I just am not sure how to minimize the seams. How do I mend the seams together without putting a metal strip across the junction of the two pieces of carpet. Obviously, I have not done this before, and all advice is appreciated.

Would the 8' wide piece do the deck and cover side to side? If so you could do from the bow to the stern in one piece(after all seats etc are out) then run the side(gunnel) pieces and put the seams at the deck/gunnel transition. Use the notched trowell and appropriate glue as it should afford some working time before it kicks off and you cant move it around any more. Do the deck first then the sides after the deck is dry. If layed out right you could use the cutoff from the deck piece to do the two side pieces, but you may need to buy a few extra running feet so as not to have to middle seam one of the sides. If you do end up having to seam somewhere use a higher strength glue at the seam(like 3M spray 90) and instead of butting the two pieces togather overlap the two pieces then cut with a straightedge and a very sharp carpet knife it gives a better seam than a butt seam.(because it is short knap carpet and can't really be porcupined out. Good luck its not all that hard just measure twice you only get one chance to cut.

Now that we are all on the same page, and you DO have seperate pieces on seats, cove bases, etc.

You will not have any seams. Order your carpet width (6 or 8) so that it reaches gunwale to gunwale, then get it long enough to be unrolled from bow to stern (carpeted areas only, of course). There will be a fair amount of waste, but save it. You can use it for trim pieces or other projects that you don't knop about yet.

Bubba 1235,
I am intrigued by the snap system. Could I just remove the current glued in carpeting from the floor and snap the new carpeting into the remaining carpeting under the gunwales on the inside of the boat? I know I would have to get snaps and a tool to install snaps. Just curious. Thank you all for your input.

Re: Searay 18 ft. -replace carpeting

I had a 1995 Sea Ray 175 that the carpet was a little worn. Instead of going thru the hassel of replacing the carpet, I replaced the whole boat. Went to a 2001 Sea Ray 190 and haven't looked back!! Just a suggestion of course... lol
