Searay Chevy V6 I/O Starter Replacement

Does anyone have any tips for replacing the starter on a chevy engine with a Merc I/O. It looks like instead of bolting in from the front (bow end), the starter bots in from the stern. The bolts are so close to the transom, that I can't get a wrench in to loosen them without pulling the engine. It's an 88 Searay 22ft with the Chevy 4.3L V6 and a Merc outdrive.

after you remove the wires from the starter, there SHOULD be two bolts UP through the rear of the starter going into the engine block....they should take a 9/16s or a 15mm wrench to remove...
