Does anybody know of a mechanic that will work on my 1976 Johnson 70hp? Local Evinrude dealer here in Rochester told me its to old for them to work on it. I towed the boat about 1.5 away to a small outboard repair shop. They had it for a month charged me 500.00 and I got it back with loose bolts various places and the idle set to 2200rpm on the muffs. I was told he had to set the idle high because the engine is old and would stall when loaded in gear. I am a car guy not a boat guy but I have never heard of anything being blamed on old age. Compression is pretty even 112,107,110.

I had the motor apart for over ten years because of mice. Took my time putting it together. Had it running on muffs. First time out in June ran great for about 15-20 mins then while running on plane about 3000rpm it bogged and would not clearup. By the time i got back to dock sounded like 1 cyl. These compression readings were after this event so no damage was done.

PLease help

You must be kidding.------The compression should be about 135 / 140 PSI on those.-----So 18 bolts to take the cylinder head of for inspection.----New head gasket is cheap compared to $100/HR shop time.

........ thanks for the reply. What am I looking for scoring? I cant see the rings? Everyone seems knowledgeable on here. Why cant i find a competent tech in 1/2 of NYS

These compression readings were cold, no warm up, and who knows how accurate my compression gauge is. My point is the engine ran great 30 mph 4500 rpm then something happened. And I really was hoping to find someone who knows these engines.

I can rebuild that engine top and bottom without a glance at a manual.-----But the border is in the way.------There must be shops in your area that work on older motors.-

Arney's Marina out of Sodus Point , NY should be a lot closer than Buffalo they have been there since the 50's , I use to take my boat there in the 1990's when i lived up that way , I've never had any issues with them . There probably booked this time of year, so don't expect a fast turn around. I know exactly what your going through there's alot of "jack legs" in the boat mechanic industry and they all charge $80.00+ an hour , it's even worse down here in the myrtle beach, sc market for older engines. I ended up buying a shop manual a few years ago and it's been one of the best investments i ever made when it comes to boating.

This WNY shop specializes in Johnson / Evinrude outboards. I have dealt with them on a few occasions and they are easy to work with and perform good work.
