Sears 7.5 Throttle Linkage

I have a 217.586752 and I can see that there has to be some sort of roller on the throttle linkage between the carb linkage and the timing plate that rotates. The Sears breakdown doesnt show it. It is like it is in between the different diagrams. Can anybody help with this? I am sure it is clear as mud. I will try to come up with a picture in the next day or two. Thanks

About what year is it? I have a '72 7.5 Ted Williams (Sears) I can look at in the morning for reference.

I think its just a brass rod that contacts the timing plate, I could be wrong, have been in the past but I looked at the diagram and it looks just like mine a 77 model eska 7.5.

Re: Sears 7.5 Throttle Linkage

Thanks for the replies. I figured out that the timing plate is the missing link. It doesnt even contact the linkage rod. I pulled the flywheel and adjusted the screws and now the throttle will open. There are 2 screws on the plate. It still wont run though. It does have spark (new points, condenser, and plug).
I am going to pull and clean the carb. But one question remains now. How do you actually set the timing and at what point does the plate contact the throttle? That might count as 2 questions. It's a 1984 or 1985.

My '72 7.5 just touches rod around idle/shift position.

Re: Sears 7.5 Throttle Linkage

I now have the linkage cam adjusted to open (contact the brass rod) at the "Shift zone" on the grip. I found a piece of stuff lodged in the spring in the fuel line and removed that. It started on the 4th pull ( I didnt choke it) and sounds good. Oh yes, one other thing I found was that when the timing plate rotates the spark plug wire rubs against the housing and wore into the wire. I put some silicon on it and removed the slack to where it has full range but no longer rubs.
I hope to get time to get in into the water Monday for a real test. Thanks for the help!

Re: Sears 7.5 Throttle Linkage

Well, I finally got time to try this again. It still wont run.
I think the linkage is ok though. Do reed valves go bad?
I can get it to "hit" if I squirt gas in the carb but it wont stay running. I have removed and cleaned the carb (twice) and put in a new pump element.
I am trying to resist tossing this thing to the fishes.

Re: Sears 7.5 Throttle Linkage

uh lets see you changed the flapper valve and fuel pump? you moved the throttle cam? several things to note hear, flapper valve can be backwards and or the gasket is messed up pulling air, fuel pump inlet can be a little tricky,
the throttle cam has to be sinked with the throttle and timing, usally its just the new carb gasket thickness and age stress on the brass rods mounting point, I just bind that up till I get wide open throttle plate when twist grip is moved all the way to fast, go back through your flapper valve, make sure your fuel pump is good and set correctly, and set your cam back like it was, hopefully the witness marks are there, and then adjust the throttle plate rod like I describe, and above all else get a manual and follow the instructions.

if all else fails donate it to me and I will fix it tomorrow and sell it back to you for a nominal fee:D plus shipping...

stay with it, don't give up its to simple...really:)

Re: Sears 7.5 Throttle Linkage

I will gladly "donate" this for $100 just to be rid of it.
When I got it the cam did not even contact the carb linkage so I had to move it and it had no spark. Didnt see any marks on the cam for a clue on the positioning. I installed new points and now it has spark. It seems like it should be a simple fix, but nooooooo.
I will have to locate a manual for it. If anyone has this on .pdf it would be greatly appreciated.
