Sears lawn tractor ~ voltage rectifier/regulator question

No output from charging system.
This tractor has a 12 HP Tecumseh engine. Stator under the flywheel checks out fine....AC voltage is 20-28 Volts from ~ 1/2 throttle to WOT. This is fine according to Tecumseh manual.
DC output is 0-2 volts on a digital voltmeter, zero on an analog one.
Manual is unequivocal....rect/reg is tostitos.

I am choking on the OEM cost ~ north of $150-.

It is a 10 Amp stator, 20-28 V AC input. Simple two wire in one out config....neg. ground, solid state unity.

OEM was REPCO FG-4720 B, Sears part number 672R.

Two questions:
1) is there any witchcraft here, or should I be able just to find and substitute a generic unit that will fill the bill? Could I find a separate rectifier and then use an auto regulator?
2) Would a 15 amp unit BE ok? I have found a John Deere part that seems like it might work. PN AM33845.

Thanks.

The Deere one that matches (Off of a JD112) is AM123296, and they are $150 :(
I can't really say if the 15 AMP box would hurt something,
Kohler Number is 41-403-08. LIST PRICE 377!! WOW
Briggs Number is 390240 No Longer Available
Any Deere dealer should be able to get an aftermarket one from Sunbelt part number B1KO42 for about $91
