I was given a pair of Ted Williams 7.5hp motors the other day, both are water cooled, vintage early 60's I guess.
They are twin cylinder motors. Both have excellent compression. Both motor covers are in sad shape, neither will stay attached. Both are broken in several places. One motor has a broken fuel inlet fitting, the other has no spark.
The model numbers are both 574-0121

Who made these motors?
There is an odd looking nipple fitting on the Starboard side of each motor, what is that for? Its about midway down on the exhaust housing.
Are they worth getting going again? Are parts available?
Where would I look to find a pair of covers for them?

Its a McCulloch then.
Were they any good? Worth fixing up?
The one looks like it would run with a new fuel fitting. The cover is a bit busted up but I suppose some time and effort could make it usable.
The motor has good compression and spark and looks super clean. The other motor has good compression but isn't as clean looking, both covers are pretty bad. I think with some work I can make one out of the two.
Did McCulloch or Scott make their own power heads back then? What exactly were these motors?

Absolutly worth fixing up if thats what you want and the lower unit is good, I recommend taking it down completely and go to McCulloch school on it w/manual...thats pretty much what you have to do to change the water pump impeller. its a real PITA but worth it because they run great.

I just parted one out w/ bad lower unit, still have a nice powerhead and flywheel & tiller

Both of these here came from the estate of an a guy in his late 90's, a buddy bought the contents of the barn and found these and a boat up in a loft. I'd sort of figure that they ran when put away, but that could have been decades ago. Someone knew they were going to sit because both were sprayed down with oil or some sort of sticky grease, filled with oil and bagged. The better of the two is missing the gear for the tiller, but there's one on the other motor. One motor has a built in light in the cover, the other does not.
The recoil on these looks identical to the recoil on my Sea King 9.6hp by Chrysler.
If I get a chance this weekend, I'll hook up a tank direct and see if I can get the better one to start.

Is that the fuel pump or some sort of filter under the front handle area? The upper tube is broke off the one, the other one don't have the same set up, its got a Chrysler type fuel fitting just off to the side.
It appears that the top casting is part of the handle?

No pics right yet, I'll have to take a few and post them.
Were these their own motor? They look an awful lot like an old Chrysler or West bend power head.
Were these reliable or just another motor that wasn't as good as the rest?

It looks well built other than the oddball cover and hinge. The whole hood is plastic, I can't picture any of them surviving over time if they were used. Otherwise the motor looks decent, it sort of reminds me of my 9.6hp Sea King from Chrysler.

I like how light they are.

I know of many runners and well tuned they'er a powerhouse for a 7.5. My first motor was a Elgin branded Mcholluch, I just recently parted it out to a Iboater in Texas to restore his Fathers 7.5 Elgin McC. mine was 63 year model. biggest weakness is they are a real pain in the @ss to service ie, changing the impeller, I think theres about 3 big screws and one linkage that can make you a real hater...LOL pray none are siezed!
I still have a long block and flywheel, mid section and tiller, I guess with the price of scrap I will just trade it for beer and bait....LOL
