Seat wood question

While I am waiting for my fuel tank, I decided to work on the interior. I built a new firewall and seat support (in photo) and will be fiberglassing/painting them (what was in there was unsealed rotted ply). I was looking at the upholstered parts of the seats and see the wood behind the foam has also seen better days. Can I get away with sealing this wood with a sealer or should this too be glassed? I know sealers are worthless on deck wood, but how about in the seats?

You can use either Epoxy resin, the smell is not so bad but the price is high. I used bondo fiberglass resin, cheaper, works good but very toxic. I did all my wood for seats, and underflooring , outdoor, and with a mask. I would not use the wood sealer.

Including myself, I think many people resin, fiberglass, or epoxy most every part they can, then put 2 coats of paint on it. because they don't want to do it again. Everyone seems to fail to remember their boats many times are 15 years old before they rotted, and will most likely only have them 1 to 5 years and get another one. I don't think they did all of that brand new 15 years ago.

So true. The wood in the cushions are factory, and I guess they lasted this long, but I like to do it right since I have it apart. So I will paint them before recovering. What paint would work? Does Rustolium oil based work on bare wood? I know it works great on glassed wood.

As for the support box and firewall, they HAVE been replaced before, but are rotting. They were not sealed with anything, so this is no surprise. In fact, the firewall was too small. It did not extend to the gunwales, leaving a huge gap between the seat support and engine compartment.

I am wondering if I should just glass the firewall, and paint the support. Thoughts?

Thanks guys!
