Second installment--Chrysler 60

I was out today with my mini Cougar Cub and was able to get a video. Again, it was a white-knuckle ride and that engine will come off that boat. It is just too much for that little hull.

The first couple of minutes of the video are me checking to be certain the go-pro is working. The last couple of minutes do not show the extent of the oscillations because my go-pro was mounted on my head. And, our heads and eyes tend to remain more stable than our body during movements.

Suffice to say, the oscillations were like a feedback and were becoming more severe when I decided to call it a day. It did not help that the trim cylinder stuck at full out and I could not trim the engine back down.

Google Mini Cub Chrysler 60 to watch the 12 minute video.

BTW: The prop is an old school Johnson Oakland bronze 10 1/2 X 15 cupped, taken from an OMC engine. In a previous post I described re-hubbing it to fit the Chrysler.

It comes up as about the fourth one down under my name and it says "customize your message" I don't know why.

Re: Second installment--Chrysler 60

The grunting is 68 with arthritis. Can't help it. Comes naturally with moving.

It was up around 50 and it was ok until I trimmed the engine up. Then it was NOT fun. It was porpoising and chine walking almost uncontrollably. The trim was jammed in full out and I needed to raise the engine then lower it to get trim back down. Obviously, I could not do that while running. I intend to replace the pump because I simply can not put up with the erratic trimming and tilting.

When stopping, the little Cub squats down and takes water over the transom and into the cockpit. After I got her on the trailer, I opened the drain plugs and let out about 10 gallons of water. With a little bad luck the boat will swamp. Not wanting to tempt fate, that engine will come off and be used on another boat. I finally reached the point of too much weight for this boat without some major modifications.

The engine, however, as I have said before is probably the best design Chrysler ever made and for a crossflow engine it is quite a good performer. I was running right around 6000 RPM there.

Found it.Looked too fast for it's size!!
I was never one for going fast on the water.
Went out on a friends 21 Chris Craft Scorpion.
Almost 500hp. Had to climb out on the bow to bring it down.
Then had to threaten the guy to slow it down!!

I will probably install the old 50 that I had on it in the last videos. Yeah, the cover says 55 but it is really a 1978 or 1980 50. I put on whatever hood happens to be closest at the time. I suppose this winter I will port it and do some other mods to get some more horsepower.

But, it will never equal the 60. That engine is just magnificent. Sounds way better too.

I never really realized how small that hull was! I just got back from a month long work engagement, and I saw this post (sorry for resurrecting it). That thing was absolutely on the top of its performance range. I think the platform is awesome though, and I would have done the exact same experiment. It looks as if you could do some hull modifications to support the hp, that is if its even an option? Trim tabs, some fiberglass work, weight in the right places? Oh please say yes ;) I'm living vicariously through your ingenuity and courage!

Re: Second installment--Chrysler 60

Because I had it upside-down on three different occasions, I completely foamed the interior behind the seat and under the white covers, and foamed under the gunwales. I also have about a dozen empty 1/2 gallon milk jugs packed in for insurance.

As far as modifying the hull, I would need to split it in half longitudinally and add in another foot or so to help with stability, flotation, and the chine-walking. That is just more work than I am willing to do.

Trim tabs are an option I have seen on other Cougar Cubs and I might consider them
