I have had my boat (19'Bayliner)for about 2 years.Whenever I needed gas,I either pre-mixed 5 gallons at a time or if I got gas from a station, I would mix a small amount of gas in a can then finish adding whatever amount I had mixed for.I have never filled the tank because I never know how much gas it will take and wasn't sure how I was going to mix it. The question is there an easier eay to do this???? I wasnt sure if I filled the tank, and then added the correct amount of oil if it would mix properly.
Help

Should be fine, as long as you give the tank a good shaking after filling

Re: Seems like a dumb question??

i had the same problem I got a pastic baby bottle that has the ounces marked on the side to measure my oil after i fill up it works great! turn the nipple upside down in the bottle and put the top on to keep any left over oil from making a mess. for the 50-1 mix i keep a small calulater in the boat. gal.x 128 divieded by 50 = oz.of oil I hope this helps

Many boat dealers sell a graduated cylinder that gives you the proper ounces of oil per gallon of gasoline.

It is OK to fill the tank and then add the proper amount of oil. It it's an inboard tank, the natural motion of the boat rocking or trailering will mix the fuel quite well.

Todays oils do not seperate out.

After filling up, measure proper amt of oil and pour into tank. Then, pick up back of trailer and shake boat real good to mix ;) :D ;)

Seriously, if you are trailering, the bumpy road should mix it up OK. When I had to mix oil w/gas, I would use 16oz per 6 gals gas for 50:1 (works out to really 48:1). I would pump 6 gals gas, pour in 16oz oil, pump 6 more, pur in 16oz, etc. I would try to stop last pumped amt on an even gal so I could estimate oil easier.

HotByte, you can't pick up the back of the trailer and shake it. It would be too heavy. So just pick up the back of the boat and shake it. Caution, don't get your finger between the boat and the trailer bunk or roller. The only way to get your finger out will be to pull real hard. This tends to strip the skin right off. Don't ask.

Adding the oil after is satisfactory. Someone mentioned using a baby bottle to measure the oil after determining the amount of gas added...great idea. Several years ago I bought 2 cycle oil in a container that had graduations (ounces) and scales (oil to gas ratios) on it. I kept that container since and use it to measure oil for various ratios, depending on the type of 2 cycle equipment I'm mixing for. The container was sold along with chain saw equipment, etc. If use see one it worth buying that pint of 2 cycle oil just to get the container.

Re: Seems like a dumb question??

Well, All 3 of my portable outboard tanks clearly state. " DO NOT mix your Oil In this container" Cant say as I really udnderstand why, but there must be a reason.

I use a 5 galon plastic gas can, and a graduated funnel with a on off pout on it to measure oil. I only put 4 galons in the gas can at a time for ease of pouring.

It would be pretty easy to just fill the tank at the pump, then dump in however much oil based on the galon count, but for some reason my father also told me not to mix oil in the gas tank of the boat ow so many years ago. *shrug* to each his own. ( ok here we go, everyone chime in and say " I have done it for years, no problems here " )

Usually I will put in a gallon of gas into the empty tank first. Then I will put in the right amount of oil needed to fill the tank with gas. Then I fill the tank full of gas. The force of the incoming gas will mix it real good.

About the only thing I would further reccomend is to add fuel stabilizer, about 1 1/2 oz per 5 gal.
I run stabilizer year round in everything I own ( Boats, ATV's, mowers, chainsaw, weedeaters, etc. )never have to worry about varnish or old fuel or anything.

Re: Seems like a dumb question??

keep a small gass can handy and mix the oil in with some gass before adding it.

ie... say you need one liter of oil. mix that oil with a liter of gas before you add it too the tank. it thins it down quite a bit, and it mixes easier

----
sorry 1 liter is about a quart. when are you american going to stop being so stubbon and go metric
