Well bought a new sei in spring 2009, ran great 2009 (100 hrs).
Found water in the u-joint bellows July 2010, fixed problem.
Ran another 25hrs in sept. and found outdrive oil in the u-joint bellows this time.
I suspect the water caused rust on the yoke which wiped out the seal.
Called sei and got a warrenty number, shipped the unit via ups Oregon to Florida on Sept. 13, SEI says they try to repair witin 3-4 days of receiving the outdrive or they will call. I just got an e-mail saying ups will deliver on Oct. 4th. I think this type of turn around is pretty good.
I assume they fully repaired the outdrive, the outdrive was not run low enough on oil that I suspect all bearings and gears where ok.
Will let everyone know what it appears they fixed. I suspect a new yoke and seal. Maybe new u-joints too I will wait and see.
Cost to me was $64 in shipping.

Re: SEI experience

That's pretty good service Elkhunter. I have been followning your SEI experience, as well as others. They sound like a very good company that stands behind there product. I know if I am faced with a big repair on my current outdrive I will just replace it with an SEI one.

Re: SEI experience

I am really glad you are sharing this with us. This is my option if my outdrive goes on me. For about $1200 you can get an upper and a lower unit, these are new units not rebuilt. I wouldn't want to try to rebuild a lower unit when I could get it new for $600.00 Same for the upper.

Keep us posted, this information is going to help a bunch of us I/O owners. I'm happy they stand behind thier product and are honoring the warranty.:)

SEI Rebuild my whole upper unit

SEI Rebuild my whole upper unit

I am back from deer hunting, no deer but my SEI outdrive is back.
They indicated they replaced the gears, seals, u-joints, yoke, and input shaft. I do have a new input shaft (old one was fine), new u-joints (old ones where probably bad due to water, and new yoke. So I assume new gears and bearings also.
I even got a new gasket set, however they forgot the o-ring between the upper and lower half.
I would have to say they stand behind their warranty. The damage was not caused by SEI, it was caused by a leaky bellows, which I still cannot determine why the bellows had a hole in it. Anyway bellows are fixed and now I have a totally rebuilt upper half.
