Re: SEI sterndrives

The SEI stern drives are well liked by most forum members here on iboats as an alternative to the more expensive OEM stern drives.

The low cost of the drive along with a three year warranty makes it hard not to consider when something expensive happens to the original drive unit.

Also please keep in mind that the SEI drives can be found here at iboats as well.:)

Re: SEI sterndrives

Ive put one behind a 454 with one season down with no issues. Beaware that they have a break in period..

How do I break in my new drive?

It is the same if you change just the upper, lower or both. For the first 5 hours do not run a constant RPM. Vary the RPM's every 5 minutes or so. Do not exceed 75% throttle for the first 5 hours. Shift into forward and reverse a minimum of 10 times in the first 5 hours. For hours 5-10 you should do short runs at full throttle. After 10 hours normal operation can resume. Change the gear lube between 10 and 20 hours.

Does SEI pay any of the shipping to return for warranty work?
What kind of boat did you install it on?

Ayuh,.... I put 'em on Highliner 222's,.... sister ships,...

1, a 350 Mpi, the other a 350 4bbl. carb,...

The Mpi was the one that broke, but I don't think it matters,...

I found 'em in a box at the door, 'n left the broken 1 in the box at the door,...
Somebody else's dept after that,...

Been running mine behind a 305 4 barrel and now 350 4 barrel and never had a problem in over 3 years. You can't beat them for the money.

You'll have to pay for shipping to Tampa on any warranty claims, however. And don't ever admit you fish in tournaments or they won't allow any warranty claim.

There are not nearly as good as OEM Mercury lower units, but you can buy a few SEI's for the cost of a new OEM unit. Even a used lower unit with a warranty is much more expensive, and you cannot count on the condition unless a really good shop goes through it.
