Marina mech says motor is locked up. I checked with another mechanic and he says I should see visible signs, such as metal shavings in the oil, water in the oil etc.. if the motor is locked up. There are none of these signs. The second mechanic I talked to said it could be possible for the outdrive to be locked up and not letting the motor turn over??

Re: Seized up motor or locked up outdrive??

UPDATE: I didn't even know where to start to pull the outdrive, So I took it to another mech for a second opinion. He seperated the outdrive from the motor and said it is definately locked up. Again there are no signs of what happened to the motor i.e. water in oil or metal shavings.
My question is where is a good place to buy a remanufactured mercruiser and is there alot to removing and replacing the motor? I have replaced motors in cars several times, is it the same or is there some special things you have to do to change the motor in a boat.

Thanks again for all of your help!!

Check out Advance auto parts. They sell reconditioned marine engines and the prices seem fair.

Re: Seized up motor or locked up outdrive??

UPDATE: Found a good marine mech through a friend fo a friend type deal. The guy is very through and clean (so far)
Hear is what he found so far:

Cam gear broke which broke the chain and wadded the chain up so bad it even ripped the bottom of the timing cover open!

Question: Have any of you experienced this before or even heard of this happening?
Remember this motor only had 136 hrs on it!

Check for bent pushrods, broken rocker arms and busted valve springs. Also bent valves.

How did the motor lock up? Were you crusing, ideling or starting? Did it suffer from water injestion?

Are you sure that is the only problem? I blew an engine one time and thought it was only the cam until I looked further and found a con rod had broke which then broke the cam.

Ken
