got a little problem on my hands.......

i have a 16 ft glastron with a 76 850 on the back.....

the motor ran great, until.....

the boat went down, the motor did not. I started it afterwards and it ran perfect. while the boat was still in (and taking on water) i ran it again, no problems, i kept a CLOSE eye on it to make sure the motor didnt go under...... and it didnt...(just so ya know, im a trained and certified in marine trades), i rebuilt this motor, and it did great for a year until the boat went under......for the first time...... even though it ran great after the fact..... i didnt run it for about a month

the motor has not been hit with flood or wind water since, but the boat has......its been sitting since about a month ago, and the motor has seized up. should i try and break it loose and run it ? or should i tear it down ??????? im only a year and a half into the rebuild

Re: seized

Open the starboard inspection plates and take a look. It would probably be wise to tear it down and clean the rusty surfaces though. Of course first check if it's a seized leg or a siezed powerhead by removing the leg.
Eric

I've been swinging wrenches a life time, take yourself out of the problem. If you're a trained tech., ask yourself,"What would you tell a customer if they brought this problem to you?" Now you have your answer. Good Luck, Joe

Re: seized

if after removing the lower unit and its still stuck its time for a complete teardown to inspect all the bearings, wristpins included for rust damage. you may not have cleared all the water from the block assy. lets hope its a lower unit :) .

Re: seized

thanks guys.

I wasnt able to get it out of the water right away after it went down, so it sat on the beach for a little while. Then one day, after sitting, poof, its frozen up. i got it out today and im going to inspect it further on my day off. i'd hate to rebuild it again after sinking the cash into it for the parts...the boat is toast, so thats getting the sawzaw. Hopefully i can salvage the motor. It ran perfect up until this. I'll see what i can do, even if i get it free'd up, im still going to tear it down i think. we'll see :)
