Johnson 1984 50 hp, 2 stroke, 2 cylinder.

We have for some period had performance problems with our engine. Which made me go through anything I can think of, including carbs etc. Symptoms: If i remove the top spark plug lead, leaving the engine running on cylinder nr 2. (bottom), it runs ok. If I reconnect the top spark plug lead, and remove the bottom one, having the engine running on cylinder nr 1 (top) alone, it dies quickly. Other than that, less performance in general. Cyl nr. 1 has died in a couple of occasions due to the spark plug going wet.

I belive I know the source of the problem ! I was lucky enough to borrow a stroboscope, and sure enough, it turns out that nr. 1 is firing with the piston in both top and bottom position ! Sometimes switching between only firing in top, and bottom position. Nr. 2 is firing ay ok.

Question now is. What do I need to replace ? anyone recognize this condition maybe ? I suspect the Power Pack, but wanted to be sure before I replace a 100$+ non-refundable part. I suspect the power pack, since that is, AFAIK, the only relevant part in the ignition system that deal with individual cylinders. Coils are tested and ok btw.

If I have it correct, you have both cylinders firing at the same time. If so! you have an ignition pak failure

Not entirely correct, they are not firing at the same time. Nr. 2 is firing when it should, i.e. when the piston is in the top position. Nr 1. however, is firing when pistion is in top AND bottom position.

Meaning.. Nr 2 fires when it should, Nr 1 fires when it should AND when Nr 2 fires.

"Ignition pak", synonym with power pack right ?
