selecting a new cam?

I have a 5.7 short block prepped and ready to toss in a cam. I plan on rebuilding the heads on the motor that is in my boat now and slapping them on the new block. I was thinking of pulling the cam and reusing it but have decided that since I need new push rods and lifters I may as well go ahead and toss in a new cam. I know people say not to use auto cams. (Not sure I buy the reasoning) I was looking at the Summit Racing web site and they have several cams listed for marine use.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? I was planning on going mild since I need durability and economy over all out power and will be doing most of my time at part throttle or idle since I'm setting her up as a fishing boat.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Thanks

Re: selecting a new cam?

It's going into a 24 foot cuddy cruiser. The boat is listed at 3700 lbs I've not weighed it but I'm guessing that is close. I'll have to look up the drive ratio. (Pulling a night shift at the hospital can be dull at times so I've been surfing the forums on my phone.)

Thanks for the links, I'll look their web site over more tonight!

The motor you are building, is it flat or roller hydraulic cam? But agree with your statement, something slightly more than stock. Also, consider going to vortec heads, with vortec 4brl intake.
