I could not seem to get conclusive information on what thrust I needed for my boat so I called Minn Kota.
What they recommend is at least 2# of thrust for every 100# of totally loaded boat that you have. As the motors only are propped for 2-5 MPH only any extra thrust you have is kind of wasted. it will not make your boat any faster.
Further, if you have a heavily loaded boat that sits deep in the water or fish in water than can get rough or hit very windy conditions you will want a little more thrust.
Most sites show you how to select shaft length based on your mount height and all so that was never an issue.
It might be good information for first time buyers like me to have.

You do want to make sure you have enough thrust to be able to control your boat even in a stiff breeze.

Yep, I figure my boat with two people and gear will only be some 1200#. So 24# should do it but I am going to go with a 40# for wind, any extra loads and rough water.
If a monsoon comes up quickly here in the summer I want to get off the lake before the lightning starts hitting the lake.
Aluminum boats and lightning strikes don't mix well.:(
