I have a 1971 Evinrude 50 h.p. Evinrude, ArrowGlass Phantom. My question is I bought the boat it had a three button select switch at the rear of the throttle lever when I went to pick up the boat the three buttons were missing I was told it was stolen. So now I need help in finding a replacement I am told is slim to none, I have been to dealerships and it cant be ordered. So any one with any help in solving the problem please help. I am told that a toggle switch will work and I have found two of them of different types I dont know which to use if it will work, one is a Spdt and the other is Dpdt., both switches offered through iboats. But I am searching for help first anyone one having a switch for sale and price with shipping and the schematics of hooking it up all the wires are there. SECONDLY: I have no key to the ignition that too was stolen so it is all hooked up except one gray wire that looks as if it never was hooked up does anyone have the schematics for the ignition switch even a photo copy of both problems I mentioned, will help. I will pay for the copies and Please responde as to first having a switch for sale or will the toggle switch be sufficient Please reply to mountainboy@peoplepc.com

Re: Selectric Switch Stolen Need Help

Hey LeRoy,
This is an old post about the Hydroelectric Shift but I think you can wire up that spdt switch like this and it'll work.
I think that gray wire is for a tach.

(Hydro Electric Shift)

The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Preminum Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).

With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

Yes Hooty, this is an old post (from last week). It was supposedly moved to this forum but got lost in the process. The SPDT switch would give (if it's the hydroelectric shift) forward gear in the center position and neutral and reverse in the other two.
Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots)...
Oh, so THAT'S what they mean by knife connectors. I couldn't find anything about "knife disconnect" outside the schematics in the Clymer manual.

LeRoy, you stopped e-mailing me (or they got lost) after the first two mails. I have that switch here and don't need it, I need the older electric shift switch (know where I can get it once I get some more money). I don't need any more for this switch than this OB dealer wants for the other one (as I mentioned in an e-mail) and I'll include shipping.
Have you tried putting 12v on the green wire yet to see if it releases the prop from forward gear? This would prove it well enough to satisfy me.

LeRoy, Just off the top of my head, you can use either of the 2 toggle switches you mentioned provided they are center off types. If you use the SPDT Center OFF, you'll also need a diode too.
Pretty simple really. It sounds alot more complicated than it really is.

Actually if the center position is off that will be forward.

Heres what we have used in the past -- a standard 3 position light switch.

All the way in (knob pushed forward) is lights off (forward gear - no power to either wire).

The middle position is one light (neutral - power to the green wire).

Knob pulled all the way out is both lights (reverse - power to both the green and blue wire).

The major downside is this provides no start in gear protection. You must be very aware!!

There is a place that probably does have a switch -- Shoal Marine. They can be reached at 941-639-3012 but they are in the Keys until the first of next month. Ask for Stan.

The grey lead is the tach lead.

Good luck!

Re: Selectric Switch Stolen Need Help

I take it, you mean the three-button unit was detached from the control unit and stolen. If that is what happened, you might be able to find a replacement unit on Ebay or someone's used parts bin. You probably will end up picking up the whole control unit -- but don't need the whole harness. You should be able to get a replacement key at a dealer, either for the current unit or the "new" one you end up installing.

As I said above, I have one of those and don't need it for my boat. LeRoy, e-mail me again about it.

Re: Selectric Switch Stolen Need Help

LeRoy, have you found a switch for this already? Each time we've tried to help (me via e-mail before and the 5 of us on this post) you've left us hanging without knowing whether the problem was solved. I believe I have the switch you need without having to rig up something that operates contrary to logical expectations (center position for forward gear).
