after starting the motor in the driveway, i decided to buy the controls for the motor so as to properly run it.

i ordered the controls off ebay for a good price and installed em.
tested it, and motor still starts.

only let it run a few secs, but was satisfied it would start again.

trailered it down to the river, dropped it in the water, and then spent 2 hours trying to start it.

-good spark, fresh gas
-pulled plugs and some gas vapours come out.
-we can smell burnt exhaust, but not a sign of firing up.

*we noticed the prop seems to be in gear while the starter is turning it over, shouldnt there be enough hydraulic pressure to set to neutral at this point?

**is it possible since it's now in gear, in water (not earmuffs like in driveway) that the additional load of water is preventing it from starting?

**when i lift the toggle lever for the primer, nothing happens, could i have an electric issue? it moved when old controls were on.

todo:

1. i plan to clean carbs and check fuel system, as there seemed to be leakage when i squeezed the bulb. floats, grime removal, etc

2. i plan on changing the sparkplugs and setting the gap to .030"

1st time down to the ramp, i sank the boat while it was still on trailer (only 6" deep inside). 2nd time down, motor wouldnt start. hopefully the 3rd time's a charm, and some helpful advice will get me fishing real soon.

thanks

I believe that they will always start in gear and after about literally a second or less it will shift to neutral. did you set your idle on the muffs? if so you could have set it too low to start while in the water. as far as your choke, take the hood off and turn your key on( but don't start the motor) and flip your choke switch. you should see and hear it operate. If not try to apply power to the purple with white stripe wire (number 6 spot, I think) on the terminal block.

if i understand right:

the motor will not be in neutral even after 6 seconds of cranking?

----

also the idle is not set yet, that was today's reason for going on the water.

i tried fiddling with the timing idle screw (all in, all out, and everywhere in between.)

n00b question of the week: where do i set my idle?
if it matters: i changed the throttle cable (lined up to start position on both ends)

choke on or off, it doesnt start in water.

have you set the ignition timing per the manual? how about link and sync? once you get it running the idle should be set at 600-700 rpms in gear and moving( not tied to the dock)

1971 evinrude 50 (shown in avatar)

i bought the motor with unknown previous history a few weeks ago.

i have the manual, and assume it just needs a little tuning to get it started

stop scratchin your heads people. a carb cleaning was definately in order.

i installed new needle valve and seats, cleaned all the 1/4" thick varnish, and scraped it (gently); the slow speed jets were totally gummed, used q-tips to clean it all.

off to repeat for carb #2.

did you get the high speed jet behind the bowl drain screw? requires tool #317002, pic below. i made mine with belt sander.

then set your low speed needle at 5/8 turns out from softly seated. it should start there, your idle speed stop screw is located on the linkage on the side of the motor, the cable connects to. i will try to get to my 71 50, and get you a picture, but can't do it till morning, and no rain.

i foolishly stated it ran in the driveway. It did, only cause i put fuel in the carb openings.

the bowls were so varnished, and all orifices had congealed oil/varnish goop.

i used a straightheaded slotted screwdriver to get at the lower orifice, and used 2 strands from a wirewheel to clear the jet of its goo.

theres was no way at all the engine would have ever run in the carbs state.

took it down to the river, again no start, even with cleaned carbs.

disgusted, i brought it home and went nuts in the driveway.
i jammed a screwdriver in the throttle body and it fired up.
finally it started.

i have now adjusted the linkage to keep the throttle slightly open.

is this the proper procedure? what should i have done to adjust the idle up to a startable point?

**edit** i found the sparkplugs were Champion J6-J (no idea who put those in there) and quickly put my QL77 plugs in there, which further runs even better.
