hello,

I recently purchased a1974 chrysler courier 231 with a 1974 135hp evinrude. I had plans of fixing up the boat but my finacial situation has changed. my question is this. is it better to seperate the boat and engine to sell. the boat needs a new transom and interior. the engine runs great with no problems at all. should i seperate them to sell to get the most for my money?

Re: selling an outboard

I would certainly seperate them, really a 37 year old boat that needs completely rebuilt isn't worth much of anything so I would scrap the boat and sell the trailer and engine.

should I leave the engine on the boat when I have it up for sale or will it be better to have the engine off the boat?

Money isn't everything. Sell the engine "as is - where is" meaning they have to take the boat if they want the engine. That will save you the headache of disposing of the boat, along with the dump fee.

Re: selling an outboard

I picked up that same motor on a junk boat last fall, with a trailer, $350.00.

I have more time than money, so the motor is pulled for my project boat and the junk boat is being parted out, trying to sell parts on CL, If all goes well I will have a free motor and some $ in pocket for all my time.

You haven't shown where your from, but around at this time of year here the motor with controls would sell for 400 to 700, the trailer for 150 to 300, the boat would cost about 120 to dispose of, unless you cut it up.

I wouldn't pay more than 400 for the package if it was in great condition.

Good luck

Re: selling an outboard

I am in the upstate of South Carolina. I kind of figured It would be in that range. it seems though that the engines on cl go for alot more when they are not attached to a boat. I have seen boats with a 50hp engine go for 4-500 and the same basic engine package without the boat go for 5-800 or more depending on year etc. I know it is a pain to get rid of an old hull. oh well we will see I may just moth ball it and see if things change, unless I get in a real pinch.

A '74 is a good motor without electric shift. I'd leave it on the boat but take real good pictures (showing as much of the motor and as little of the boat as possible) and list it for $800. Let a potential buyer figure out if they want to take the boat as well or not.
