Hey all.
I have a sening unit that works. I have checked the wires, gauge, and the actual sending unit but when I begin tightening the bolts, the gauge pegs out to full. The unit does has a gasket and I replaced the gauge with a new one.
Why would the gauge peg out to full when I start tightening the bolts?

Re: Sending Unit

Sounds like the sending unit is grounding out. How do you know it's good? The bolts are going to ground it to the tank almost regardless of where you put the gasket, but mine has a separate ground and is insulated from the tank via plastic. You missin a piece maybe?

Re: Sending Unit

Check the positive (threaded) connection on the sender. It MUST be insulated from the metal part of the sender by the insulating washers. If they are out of place and the threaded post touches the metal you ground the sender and it will peg. And for gosh sakes, stop messing with the fuel sender with the ignition on. Sparks can ignite the fuel vapors.

Dockwrecker: Not sure if there is anything missing. Had it put on by someone else. I can take the unit out of the tank and move the arm up and down and watch the fuel gauge move from empty to full. So assumed it was working properly. Now sure what is going on with this thing.

Re: Sending Unit

Silvertip: thanks for the input. Will check what you have suggested. May have some connection issues that I need to address.
