Does anyone know what sensor this is? Look at the link or image attached.
I hooked it up to my temperature guage but unsure if thats what is for. What is it called? I have a 1997 (I think but not sure since the plate was removed) Evinrude 175 OCean Pro.

Anybody know how ot identity the engine? The ID plate was removed. I belive its a 1997 but not sure.

I posted a bunch of photos of the engine where I belive some identifying marks are but not sure if they help. Any a bunch of engine photos are here to help you identify the engine for me....

Re: Sensor identification??? & Engine identification help

That's the temperature sensor for a temperature gauge. The blue and tan wire runs to a temperature switch for the warning horn.

The temperature sensor needs a good electrical ground and a good thermal connection, so clean it and the hole it is mounted in if you want it to work.

What's the number on the powerpack? That will be a good starting point for the model if the welch plug is missing.

It's more recent than 1992 and less than 1997. Probably 1993 or 1994.

The newest it can be is a 1996. That's the last year the motor came with the red cannon plug.

I do believe the last of the red cannon plugs were in 1995. System check came out in 1996 where the connectors were all different

Does the 2 temperature sending units get wired wired together then to the gauge?

Re: Sensor identification??? & Engine identification help

We can narrow down the year by seeing the front of the carburetors and if they have adjustable idle screws, are they slotted for a screwdriver or hex shaped for an allen-wrench. 91 thru early 93 models had fixed jets.

I thought maybe this round metal medallion on the back of the engine might help identify it, no?

No, one per gauge, or use a switch so that you can go from reading one head to the other.

Re: Sensor identification??? & Engine identification help

There are 14 different models it looks like for that year.

1993 Evinrude 175
E175EXATG 1993
E175EXATS 1993
E175EXETG 1993
E175EXETR 1993
E175GLETG 1993
E175GLETR 1993
E175NXATG 1993
E175NXATS 1993
E175NXETG 1993
E175NXETR 1993
VE175EXETG 1993
VE175EXETR 1993
VE175GLETG 1993

Any idea how I can figure out which model I have or does it matter?

That's just Evinrude and there are the Johnson models too. http://rides.webshots.com/album/559695415cwBujY

Click the the thumbnail for the codes.

If you take that serial number on the welch plug to an authorized BRP/Evinrude dealer, she can nail that down for you if they wish to.

Re: Sensor identification??? & Engine identification help

From the fixed jet carbs, it is a '91, '92, or '93 motor. From the vapor pump hose for the airbox, I think you have a '91 or '92 motor.

the black intake manifold gaskets were also 1991 and 1992. It would be a good idea to change them as the new ones won't swell and block off the starting fuel passageways from ethanol fuels.

Re: Sensor identification??? & Engine identification help

Does anyone else have some insight into how I perfectly identify this engine? The chart should help but it did not. Maybe Im reading it wrong.

This is what I know:
Its an electric start - key start
Carburators
Loop Charged V6
Im in the US so I assume its made here
Its has the OIS optical ignition system 2000
The local parts dealer says its from 1992-1993 so I think its a 1993

Re: Sensor identification??? & Engine identification help

I decided to call Evinrude today, not thinking they could actually help me but low and behold they were. I gave the rep my serial number from the engine to see if he could identify it properly. This was an issue from the start since the tag was ripped off that held the identification # making it hard to identify parts for the engine, etc. Winds up being that its not a 175, the cover is just a 175 cover dangit. Its a 150hp engine. Could explain why the powerhead is bad, if it was the wrong one installed by the slep before me.

Re: Sensor identification??? & Engine identification help

Be very careful if ordering carburetor parts as there were the mid-year changes from fixed jets (yours) to adjustable idle mixture screws. There were 3 mid-year model numbers for 1993 - G, S, and R series motors.
