Have a new problem with my 76 honda 7.5hp

I was trying to change the water pump managed to get the foot off. Removed the bolts holding the impeller housing and managed to only break one bolt (not a big problem). My problem is that Honda manufactured the shaft in two pieces. One being the lower which the impeller is attached to and the upper being a hollow steel tube (i guess they were trying to save on weight). These two pieces are stuck together. The only way to change the impeller is to unstick these pieces. I would try heating it up but the impeller housing is plastic and I'm afraid of messing the seals up in it. Plus where they are joined together is covered by this housing. I sprayed WD40 around it and attached a pair of visegripes to one end and banged on it with a hammer but it won't budge. Anybody got any suggestions beside replacing the two shafts.
Could these two pieces be threaded together and need to be unscrewed? It looks like the upper shaft has been pressed into a square shape where the two shafts meet. Help! :(

Re: separating shaft

Here's the diagram #9 is stuck on #10 with #3 in the middle.

They say #10 is discontinued so I don't want to screw it up. #9 is $106

Re: separating shaft

Well I used my own brain last night. I took a piece of steel rod and ran it through the top piece and banged on it. Took about 10min of hard banging but it finally came out.

Question the lower shaft is pretty corroded and the piece has been discontinued. How can I repair it. Could I take it to a machine shop and have them fix it. What kind of metal and what kind of process should I use. I mean will adding heat to it effect the stability of the piece. And it was chrome plated so should I plate it again?

Thanks guys. :D
