I have a 1987 dixie 1760 and need to repair the floor and dry it out. I was told that you can remove the bump rail and remove the inner shell from the hull. is this true? and if so are there any tricks that i need to know?

thanks
jim

You now need to change your user name -

Plenty of information in the project boats section on this and check out the red search at the top of the page.

Lotsa work but worth it unless you are planning on dumping the boat. You may not have to split the hull.

lucky,

I would not split the upper and lower halves unless you absolutely have to. I would cut into the floor and see just how bad the rot is.

You may want to look at the posts on the Project Boats thread and see JasonJ's work.

He has done what you are describing. Detailed pic's too.

The floor has more soft spots that solid ones. I cut in to it and the inner hull and stringers that i can see look good but the plywood is shot there are pieces laying in the bottom of the boat it looks like the plywood is falling away from the fg. If i split the hull how do i remove the rest of the wood from the shell and replace it?

Lucky.. I agree, you need a new name now! :)

I've just split my 16' Capri for the transom replacement. If you only need to replace the floor, you shouldn't need to split the top from the bottom. ONLY, if you need to replace the transom wood should you split the boat, "Only if you can not replace the transom from the outside".

To split the two, first remove the rub rail and channel. My Bayliner was rivetted together, some maybe screwed. Then remove the wiring, or loosen, then the engine must be removed. Don't forget the steering, shifter cables, and all the other things that are attached to the bottom and top at the same time. THEN...after you drill all the rivets, take a sturdy puddy knife to pry the two sections apart "BE CAREFUL" not to pull to hard and crack the upper shell. Once you have the top loosend, take a 2x4 and place it between the two sections in the front, 'bout 4' back, then one in the back,'bout 3' in. Lift the boat using the 2x4's and move to a save spot. "NOW REMEMBER, IF YOU HAVE A WINDSHIELD, BRACE THIS SO THIS WILL NOT SAG AND POSSIBLY CRACK THE TOP". Once you have this off.. the transom can be worked on from there, the floor is your baby,, I didn't have to work on the floor. What I did for the transom, was I took a "ROTOZIP" tool and cut the "inside" transom fiberglass off, then used putty knives, drills, prybars and whatever else worked to dig out "ALL" off the rotten wood. Then grinded the exsisting part of the outside wall (transom) and got it all roughed up. Then used a good quality plywood, NOT TREATED, just a good quality wood, and cut to fit. Used Fiberglass matting and cloth w/resin to create the new transom. RTFL, on the resin. (read the F***** label). I then got a quart of GEL coating from my local auto supply store, and put 2 coats of this on the finished wood to create a seal... This is how far I am now... This week end I will finish... by replacing the top half of the boat. Use the same, but new, rivets to attach the two. replace all the hardware, trim, motor, and "everything" else.. This should complete this project....
OH.. if I missed a step....sorry.. please read all labels before starting... and keep safety in mind when using resin....GOOD LUCK, Lucky... let us know how this turned out.....JC.

Is your boat a bowrider? If it is, you will need to pop the top off. If you need to replace the transom, pop the top off. Its not hard to get it off. Remove all sterring, wiring and engine controls, then:

1.remove rubber strip from aluminum.
2.remove aluminum bracketing. Screws may be rusted, I used a 4 1/2 angle grinder to grind the heads off and pulled aluminum off.
3.the two pieces will either be glued, stapled, riveted, or lord knows what together. Remove whatever and fully seperate the two.
4.The splashwell may be bonded to the transom, but it breaks free fairly easy.
5.Get three buddies, promise them a stripper and some brew, and lift the top off, place it wherever, and make sure it is supported well.
6.Have a good ol' time.....
