My septic tank has a 4" wide, 4" tall black plastic pipe with pipe cap sticking up from the ground next to my house.

Is this where you pump-out the tank?

Is it for when my parents show up in their RV and they can dump into it?

Just a-wonderin what the heck it is :)

Is the pipe plumed directly into the septic tank, the plumbing going to the tank, the plumbing from the tank to the field drain, or into the field drain?

Probably mainly to allow access for pump out, KRS, but your parents can use it, too.

Mine was rigged that way when I bought this place.

I dug it out and put a ground level access hatch in its place so that I could mow there.

Probably for an RV. For septic inspections and pump-out when its time to sell, the hatches will have to be uncovered and pulled.

Good info.

RP, I dont' know 8), was hoping they were "standard".

It appears to be right above where I expect the septic tank to be.

I like the idea of a ground-level hatch.

I should remove the cap and stick a stick in there and see how deep and dirty it gets, .... that'll tell me where it goes :^

Were required to have a clean-out plug outside the house,may-be that but looks like who ever did it would put it at ground level.

My money is on the clean-out plug.

If that's what it is, you may want to be careful about marking it if you redo it at ground level. Otherwise It could become covered with dirt & grass over time. Had this happen at a rental place I've got. The cleanout was about 12-15' away from the house, maybe 3-5" under the dirt, & that fact added quite a bit of expense when the line plugged and a plumber couldn't find the plug....:'(
