Here I am with a new problem and I still havent had the opportunity to address my shifting problem yet. Anyway, Boat is a 1986 Ebko, 350 engine with a Mercruiser Stern Drive (Alpha Unit). Im out boating and everythings normal, boats running great. I shut the engine down for a while to swim. I get back in and start her up. I put her into gear barely give it any throttle and I get a pretty serious vibration which sounds like its coming from either the rear of the engine, or the stern drive. I figured I might have snagged a rope or something so I raise the stern drive and check for anything
nothing. Start it up again, and make sure the oil pressures fine and put it in gear, same thing. Instead of taking any chances, I shut it down and have a buddy tow me in. Got the boat home and did some simple checking. Pulled the plugs and checked the oil for water or something worse. Plugs look perfect, no water in oil. Did a compression check. All cylinders 8 measure 150 pounds. Everything seems fine. I put the old earmuffs on and fire her up. Sounds fine. I decide to rev her up a little. As soon as I rev the engine past 1700 rpms the vibration appears, so Im pretty sure its not the stern drive. I didnt push the rpms any higher to see if the vibration would disappear at a higher rpm. From my backyard mechanics background, it seems to me like it might be something like a bad u-joint or something. Do the u-joints spin when the boat is not in gear? Does anyone have any clues what this vibration might be? Im not even going to worry about my minor shifting problem until I figure this one out. As always, thanks for any insights.

Scotty
