Serious Engine Vibration Above 1700 rpm's, Help!

Here I am with a new problem and I still haven’t had the opportunity to address my shifting problem yet. Anyway, Boat is a 1986 Ebko, 350 engine with a Mercruiser Stern Drive (Alpha Unit). I’m out boating and everything’s normal, boats running great. I shut the engine down for a while to swim. I get back in and start her up. I put her into gear barely give it any throttle and I get a pretty serious vibration which sounds like it’s coming from either the rear of the engine, or the stern drive. I figured I might have snagged a rope or something so I raise the stern drive and check for anything…nothing. Start it up again, and make sure the oil pressure’s fine and put it in gear, same thing. Instead of taking any chances, I shut it down and have a buddy tow me in. Got the boat home and did some simple checking. Pulled the plugs and checked the oil for water or something worse. Plugs look perfect, no water in oil. Did a compression check. All cylinders 8 measure 150 pounds. Everything seems fine. I put the old earmuffs on and fire her up. Sounds fine. I decide to rev her up a little. As soon as I rev the engine past 1700 rpm’s the vibration appears, so I’m pretty sure it’s not the stern drive. I didn’t push the rpm’s any higher to see if the vibration would disappear at a higher rpm. From my backyard mechanics background, it seems to me like it might be something like a bad u-joint or something. Do the u-joints spin when the boat is not in gear? Does anyone have any clues what this vibration might be? I’m not even going to worry about my minor shifting problem until I figure this one out. As always, thanks for any insights.

Scotty

A bad u-joint would do that for sure. They are turning while the engine is running, in gear or not. That would've been my first guess as well.

Would a bad u-joint work fine up to 3000 RPM, then cause the engine to vibrate? That is the problem I am having.

The engine coupler could do that as well I suppose. If it's in gear with the leg trimmed down and your compression is good, this starts to sound like a bent prop shaft. You'd likely feel something below 3000 rpm though.

I looked at the coupler today - no signs of wear or rubber shavings, but it is a little hard to see well. The engine runs perfectly smooth up to 3000 RPM, then starts to shake. If you push it harder, it shakes harder with no increase in RPM.

If it's really bad it alomst has to be the u-joints. A badly misfiring ignition might cause that too.

I just replaced and set all ignition components, except plug wires. I had narrowed it down to that and u-joints. Could engine alignment be a possibly cause, or would that show sooner in the RPM spectrum? The engine and outdrive were recently R/R, so I assume they did the alignment properly.
