While about 15 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico this wknd, my 2005 5.0 Mercruiser's belt shredded.

After a very long day of getting towed in by the Coast Guard (thanks, guys!), luckily we made it back.

My question is, once I buy a belt how do I know what order it goes on? There is about 7 different pulleys that it goes in and out in? Is there a pulley on it (which one) that will pull down so the belt can slip on? Unfortunately, I dont have a manual.

Thanks for the help.

There will be usually one tension pully that you have to pull back, spring loaded. For wrapping around the pullys, it can be a puzzle but the flat pullys will have the back side of the belt against it and the grooved pullys will have the grooved side wrapped around it. HTH

Need some more information, is it raw water cooled, or a closed system. Alpha or Bravo, and do you have power steering?

The pulleys tend to have either grooves or smooth. You simply match up the grooved side of the belt to grooved pulleys. And yes, there should be one pulley that is moveable. Good luck.

Don't know if it is the same or not, but here is a pic of mine - it is a 2003 model with power steering and a raw water pump. For what it is worth, the adjustable pulley is not spring loaded on mine, but actually screws up or down.

With a sterndrive, there are only 2 options shown in the manual. a in the drawing below (the one on the top right of each) is the adjustable pulley. Takes a 5/8" wrench for the locknut and a 5/16" wrench to turn the stud the locknut is on.

Re: Serpentine Belt

I drew a belt routing inside my engine cover and always carry a spare belt. It also helps to have a cheap tool set stashed on the boat.
